UNESCO Adds Italian Opera Singing to Intangible Cultural Heritage List
UNESCO recently announced the addition of Italian opera singing to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This musical art form typically involves intricate plots, elaborate staging, and virtuoso singing. The organization described Italian opera as “a physiologically controlled way of singing that enhances the carrying power of the voice in acoustic♦ spaces such as amphitheaters and churches.”
Italian opera originated in the city of Florence during the late 1500s and early 1600s, later becoming popular at royal courts across Europe. Today, Italy boasts around 60 opera houses, which have produced many global stars. One Italian soprano stated that it is thanks to opera that the Italian language is so well known around the world. Opera singing will now join other Italian traditions, such as pizza making and truffle hunting, as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
