Climate Change Causes National Borders to Be Redrawn
In an agreement in 2023 between Switzerland and Italy, part of their shared border is set to be redrawn due to the acceleration of glacial melting. Though Switzerland has already officially signed the agreement, Italy has yet to do so. Large sections of the border between the two countries have been defined by glacier ridgelines and areas of perpetual snow, but increasing climate change has caused the natural boundaries to shift.
According to the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network, Switzerland’s glaciers lost 4% of their volume in 2023. The revised boundaries will affect regions beneath the Matterhorn and near several popular ski resorts. These changes aim to clarify which country is responsible for the management and maintenance of specific natural areas.
