Would you believe that one in four Americans still has a Teddy bear from their childhood? You would be right to doubt. The real number may be even more than that! But is there a scientific reason for why they love these toys?
One thing we know is that children love soft toys. Humans love big-eyed, short-faced animals with big cheeks. Teddy bears have all of those qualities. However, why would adults keep their childhood toys?
Corinne Sweet, an expert on the matter, says wrapping our arms around our Teddy bears brings us a sense of comfort and peace. This sense of safety is something humans of all ages long for. One study even suggests that hugging a Teddy bear can make people want to help others more. Those who owned a Teddy bear as a kid are more likely to offer aid later in life. Not only are Teddy bears great toys, but they make us better people!
So go ahead, find an old childhood toy. It may be a Teddy bear, another stuffed toy, or even a blanket. Give it a nice hug, and share your joy!
