Everyone knows at least one fable. These short tales are told to entertain and educate. They commonly include animals which act like humans to teach a lesson about morals. Fables come from many different places and cultures, but there is one person who is more famous than any other when it comes to fables. His name was Aesop, and he was a slave who lived in Greece over 2,500 years ago.
Aesop might have been born in modern-day Turkey or possibly Ethiopia. However, beyond being known as a great storyteller, not much is certain about him. He was said to be a very clever person who could please and confuse people with the stories he told. Thanks to his speaking ability, he was able to gain his freedom and become an advisor to the rich and powerful in Greece.
Today, Aesop is credited with as many as 300 classic fables although he did not create all of them. Some scholars believe there are about 100 that can be traced back to Aesop. His stories were most likely a collection of tales from Europe, Africa, and Asia. Throughout European history, many popular fables with an unknown origin were said to be Aesop’s. In this way, his reputation as a master storyteller continued to grow long after his death.
