On October 28, 2021, Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms Incorporated, or Meta for short. The company’s platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, were not affected by the change. The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, explained in a press release that the new name better indicates the company’s current priorities. The word “meta” is Greek, which means “after” or “beyond.”
The company is rebranding itself as it pursues projects in virtual reality and augmented reality. Zuckerberg plans to develop the “metaverse.” This has been described as a digital extension of the real environment. The metaverse will connect the online world with the real world by digitally copying physical spaces. Only time will tell if Meta’s project will be successful.
