人物傳記
This Ukrainian artist’s works have become symbols of peace.
Maria Prymachenko was a famous Ukrainian artist. As a child, Prymachenko did not have an easy life. She was born in 1909 to a poor family . She became sick with polio, which prevented her from walking normally and affected her ability to create. She also didn’t have an art teacher. Her first artistic experience was when she drew pictures of flowers in some sand with a stick. Later, she painted her house with natural dyes. Prymachenko taught herself how to paint and created her own unique style. She was known as a master of naïve art, which suggests that artists of this style have not had formal art training.
In 1936, her art was featured in an exhibition that toured several cities, including Moscow and Warsaw. The following year, her work was shown in Paris at the World’s Fair. Prymachenko’s art continued to gain recognition over the years. In 1966, she was awarded the Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, one of the country’s highest honors. After her death, she was recognized by UNESCO. There is even a street in Kyiv that was named after her.
