Celebrate the culture of the Rapa Nui people
Easter Island, located on the Pacific Ocean , is known throughout the world for its famous Moai statues. The statues were carved over 800 years ago by the local people on the island, known as the Rapa Nui. The Rapa Nui people still live on the island today, and every year, they hold a special festival to honor their cultural traditions.
The Tapati Festival lasts for two weeks in late January or early February, and it includes a wide range of activities. The full name of the festival is “Tapati Rapa Nui,” which literally means “Rapa Nui Week” in the local language. The first Tapati Festival was organized in the 1970s to promote the cultural identity of the Rapa Nui. They believed it was especially important for young people to celebrate local traditions.
