For two full weeks, people on Easter Island sing, dance, and party each night and enjoy sports competitions during the days. One big event is a triathlon that involves paddling on a reed canoe, running around a lake carrying two huge bunches of bananas, and then swimming across the lake. Another unique tradition is the Haka Pei. In this extreme sport, competitors slide down a steep hill on a sled made of banana tree trunks.
For the locals, the most important competition is the annual selection of the Queen of the Tapati. Every year, two young women are chosen among the islanders to compete for the title of queen. They join many activities to gain points, and the one with the highest point total becomes queen at the end of Tapati.
