Before the 20th century, most straws were made of metal, paper, or pieces of grass. Plastic straws became popular after World War II and were soon found in every restaurant, and eventually, in every ocean. Pictures of ocean animals with plastic straws in their environment alerted the public to the danger of plastic waste. Many countries have responded by making plastic straws illegal.

With plastic straws going out of style, there is a new market for eco-friendly drinking straws. Reusable drinking straws can be made from a few different materials. One of the most popular styles is a drinking straw made of metal, usually copper or aluminum. These are now available in most stores.
