Barbie dolls have been a popular toy since their introduction in 1959. However, they have also faced their fair share of problems over the years. People criticized Barbie as an example of unrealistic beauty standards. Such standards put pressure on young girls to be skinny or made them feel uncomfortable about their body shape or skin color.
Mattel Inc. responded to this criticism by offering diversity in their products and making Barbie
a better role model. In 2016, the company introduced Barbie Fashionista, a line of dolls with a wide range of skin tones and body types. In 2022, they expanded the line to include more dolls with physical disabilities and medical conditions.
