Noise pollution is a source of stress.
When we think about pollution, most people imagine things like hazy air, dirty water, and litter in the ocean. Did you know there is another kind of pollution that is completely invisible?
Noise pollution is common in cities around the world, and it can create serious health problems for humans and animals. The constant noise from traffic, construction, and airplanes can affect our hearing and stress levels.
Sound is measured in decibels (dB). A barking dog has a loudness level of about 70 dB, and a car horn is about 90 dB. The loudest cities in the world are at a level of about 100 dB. Studies have shown that when noise is above 30 dB, it becomes difficult for people to get a good night’s sleep. What’s worse, noise above 70 dB over a period of time can damage a person’s hearing.
When people are exposed to loud noises all the time, they can develop higher blood pressure, hearing loss, and increased stress levels. It can also be difficult for people to focus and think clearly. For animals, noise pollution changes their natural breeding cycles and could be one of the factors that leads to the extinction of some species.
