A final goodbye for all beloved dog companions
In the 1940s, legendary writer Eugene O’Neill wrote a touching prose poem to his dying dog, Blemie. O’Neill wanted to honor Blemie and comfort his wife, who was sad about the death of their pet. Later, he would publish it under the title The Last Will and Testament of an Extremely Distinguished Dog .
The prose poem is written as if the author were Blemie—an elderly dog who knows he is dying. Blemie decides to bury his will inside the mind of his master, O’Neill. After Blemie dies, O’Neill will discover the will when he remembers his beloved dog. Since Blemie owns nothing valuable, he leaves all of his love to his owners and everyone who ever cared for him. Blemie asks that his owners not feel sad for too long because he led a very happy life before leaving the world. Blemie says he looks forward to the afterlife and encourages his owners to have another pet after he is gone.
