Eugene O’Neill was one of the most famous playwrights of the 20th century. He spent most of his early years traveling with his father, who was a stage actor. At age seven, he was sent to boarding school, away from his family. He was later admitted to Princeton University but dropped out before finishing his first year. After that, O’Neill started what he called his real education through “life experience.”
The following years nearly cost him his life. O’Neill became addicted to alcohol during his travels around the world by sea and later contracted tuberculosis. When he recovered, O’Neill decided to turn over a new leaf and started writing plays. Although his first efforts weren’t well-received, he kept improving and finally reached an extraordinary level of success.
