People have found many creative ways to eat plants, and the carnivorous tropical pitcher plant has not been spared from humankind’s appetite, either. In Malaysian Borneo, along with some other Southeast Asian countries, residents have developed a tasty way to snack on the pitcher plant. Malaysians take advantage of the plant’s rare and unique shape to cook a dish known as lemang periuk kera. The meal is made by filling the cup-like portion of the pitcher plant with sticky rice, which is then covered with coconut milk and steamed for one hour. It is a popular treat sold in the city of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo and is regarded as a heritage food.
While some care has been taken over the past years in picking pitcher plants so that they don’t become threatened with extinction, there are recent signs that this may indeed be happening. According to Dr. Mohd Norfaizal Ghazali, a Malaysian agricultural researcher, the number of pitcher plants has been declining due to the fact that people are harvesting pitcher plants to make lemang periuk kera. Bush fires during the dry season are another factor in their decline. With no restrictions on using tropical pitcher plants in Malaysia as tasty snacks, there is concern that their numbers will continue to drop in the future. One possible way to deal with the problem is to encourage the growth of the plants by commercial businesses that could meet the demand.
