Through a series of unexpected events, the girls’ lives suddenly change. Beth contracts scarlet fever and becomes ill. Jo agrees to take care of Beth, and Amy is sent to live with her rich aunt. While attending a party, Meg meets a wealthy boy, Laurie, who falls in love with her. However, Meg is in love with John Brooke and three years later, they get married and have twins.
Meanwhile, Jo’s writing career takes off, and she begins studying German with Professor Bhaer. At the same time, Amy goes on a vacation in Europe with her wealthy aunt and runs into Laurie there. Shortly after, the girls receive the terrible news that Beth has died. Laurie helps Amy get over her sadness, and they decide to marry. Soon after, Professor Bhaer proposes to Jo as well. After thinking it over, she accepts. At the end, the girls and their new families all celebrate their mother’s 60th birthday together.
The main theme of Little Women is family. At that time, people spent more time at home, so families were often the center of their lives. The girls are taught that getting married and having kids is the greatest joy in life. This leads the girls to spend lots of time seeking the perfect husband. The book also sheds light on the lives of the working poor. While poverty is seen as a hardship, it is also viewed as a tool that teaches strength of character. Independence is another key theme in Little Women. Jo’s struggles are a symbol of the limitations placed upon women at the time. Although she desires to have a free and exciting life, she settles down because it’s what society expects of her. However, she does find some independence through her writing, much like Louisa May Alcott did.
