Author Louisa May Alcott was born in a small American town in 1832. As a child, her father was strict with her and her sisters. He encouraged them to live a safe, traditional life. This angered Alcott. She wanted to live life on her own terms without relying on the support of a man.
As an adult, Alcott turned to writing as a creative outlet. Her independent views on feminism and the evils of slavery were rare in a time when women’s voices were often silenced. Her 1868 novel Little Women became a modern classic. It’s a coming-of-age story about four teenage sisters. Although fictional, it was partly based on Alcott’s childhood. The book was a huge success and made her a literary star. In her later years, Alcott tried to bring attention to gender inequality. She helped launch the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union, a group fighting for equal rights in the workplace. In her final years, Alcott suffered from chronic health problems. At age 55, she died suddenly after suffering a stroke.
The main characters in Little Women are four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. At the start, they are preparing to celebrate Christmas in a new neighborhood. The girls were forced to move after their father lost all of his money and left to serve as a pastor in the American Civil War. So, this will be their first year celebrating the holiday without him. The daughters all have unique personalities. Meg, the oldest sister, is an attractive girl who believes in traditional values. Jo has a bad temper and loves to write. Beth loves music and tries to keep the peace at home. The youngest, Amy, dreams of living a glamorous life.
