afraid是形容詞，廣泛的使用在形容「害怕」的情緒，可以這樣用：
- I’m afraid I’m not making much progress with my French.
恐怕我的法文沒多大的進步。 - That young man is afraid of nothing.
那個年輕人什麼都不怕。
另外，afraid也有「恐怕、很遺憾地」意思，是一種客氣的說法，後面接的多為不好的事情，也可在委婉拒絕時使用。
- I'm afraid something has come up, so I can't keep our appointment.
我恐怕臨時有事，所以我無法赴約。 - I’m afraid not. 我恐怕不行
- I'm afraid (that) I can't help you this time.
恐怕這次我沒辦法幫你。
afraid 之後除了加 that 子句之外，也可接介系詞 of，之後再接害怕的人或物
- Carrie is afraid of that old professor, who is tough and never smiles.
凱莉很怕那位既嚴格又不苟言笑的老教授。 - I'm afraid of cockroaches, especially those that can fly.
我很怕蟑螂，尤其是會飛的那種。
Fear可以當名詞或是動詞用，有「害怕; 恐怕, 猜想」的意思，有幾種用法如下：
for fear of... 因為怕⋯; 因恐⋯以免⋯
he people dare not protest for fear of retribution by the military.
人們因為恐懼軍方的嚴懲而不敢抗議。
live in fear of... 活在……的恐懼中
Some rich people live in fear of being kidnapped.
一些有錢人活在被綁架的恐懼中。
be free from fear 免於恐懼
We all have the right to live a life free from fear.
每個人都有權過著免於恐懼的生活。
有句名言在一句話同時用了兩個 fear，最後一起來學一下特別的用法：
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
恐懼的本身才可怕。
原句中的第一個fear 是及物動詞, 第二個fear 則為名詞, 句尾的itself 是反身代名詞, 用來強調其前名詞fear。
應用篇：
There’s nothing to be afraid of in life. In the words of one brave man, Franklin D. Roosevelt, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” A brave man knows no fear. We should all try to be brave for fear is the only thing that can cause a man’s downfall.
人生沒有什麼可怕的。勇敢的羅斯福總統就曾說過：『恐懼的本身才可怕。』勇敢的人不知道什麼是畏懼。因此我們應勇敢起來，因為恐懼才是造成一個人衰敗的唯一原因。
