The World Health Organization (WHO) declared an unusual outbreak of the monkeypox virus in May 2022. The virus, which is commonly found in Central and West African nations, has spread to over 20 countries, such as the UK, the US, and Spain. The disease is spread by physical contact and is highly contagious. The WHO warns that the world is at a turning point: managing the few current cases well now will be critical in preventing another global pandemic.
While monkeypox is the latest threat to the global population, it is nothing new to African nations, where occasional cases and outbreaks have been reported since the 1970s. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pains, and exhaustion. A person who has had monkeypox may feel unwell for three to four weeks. If sick, a person should limit contact with others and quarantine at home until symptoms disappear.
