Climate Warriors or Art Vandals?
Since June 2022, climate activists have made the news by targeting famous works of art to raise awareness about global warming. In Florence, Italy, a pair of protesters glued their hands to the Botticelli masterpiece Primavera. In London, activists threw tomato soup onto Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers .
In response, representatives of nearly 100 art museums signed a statement saying the activists don’t understand how fragile the artworks are. They must be protected “as part of our world cultural heritage,” the statement added.
Some people have called these activists heroes and said their actions call attention to the dangers of climate change. Others think these stunts amount to vandalism and are unlikely to change people’s minds. Thankfully, no permanent damage to the art has been done since most of the paintings are behind glass.
