hit 雖然是『打擊』的意思,但 hit the books 卻是指『唸書』。這個俚語其實翻成『K 書』會更為傳神,因為 K 在中文口語中就是『打』。
小雄已經高三了,可是他還是整天沉迷線上遊戲不讀書,媽媽怕他上不了好的學校,不禁憂心忡忡,每天都在碎碎念:
You'd better hit the books, or else you won't be able to get admitted to a good university.
= You'd better study, or else you won't be able to get admitted to a good university.
(你最好要 K 書,要不然你就上不了好大學了。)
hit 一字常常用在英文俚語中,如 hit the hay(去睡覺)。
小雄快被瑪莉的嘮叨逼瘋了,於是就大叫:
Stop nagging! I'm going to hit the hay.
= Stop nagging! I'm going to hit the sack.
= Stop nagging! I'm going to go to bed.
(不要再嘮叨了!我要去睡了。)
