Hawaii’s Worst Wildfire Disaster
Deadly wildfires destroyed Maui’s Lahaina town in Hawaii and claimed over 115 lives. Fueled by global warming, drought, and high winds from Hurricane Dora, the wildfire became the deadliest one in the US in more than a century. Countless people have been left homeless as a result. People questioned why Hawaiian Electric, the electric company of Hawaii, didn’t take safety measures to prevent the disaster, and blamed the local government for not using warning sirens.
The Lahaina fire, the largest and most damaging one among the many wildfires that affected Maui, was especially hard to deal with due to difficult terrain and weather conditions. With the town seriously damaged by the flames, the recovery plan is expected to take many years and cost billions of dollars.
