There are more than 6,000 national parks around the world. One of the most famous is Yellowstone National Park, which spreads across parts of the US states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Created on March 1, 1872, Yellowstone was the first national park in the United States. It may also have been the first national park in the entire world, though there is some evidence that a national park was established in Mongolia in 1778. Regardless of whether or not it was the world’s first, Yellowstone contains nearly 9,000 square kilometers of natural beauty.
The park’s geography is wild and rough with mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. The appearance of the landscape is largely the result of volcanic activity and earthquakes. The park experiences hundreds of earthquakes a year, but most of them are too small to be noticed by humans. Among the many interesting features of Yellowstone are its more than 300 geysers. These occur because large cracks in the terrain allow water to fall deep under the ground. Upon contact with rocks heated by magma, the water boils and builds up pressure until it is shot out of the ground along with steam. This phenomenon creates a glorious effect.
