Wes had also lost his mother to cancer, and he also happens to be taking a break from a relationship. He has stopped seeing his girlfriend, Becky. When Macy learns this, she feels as though someone finally understands what she is going through. She can talk to Wes in a way she couldn’t talk to her mother or Jason. In the chaosof her new routine, Macy begins to feel alive again.
In the end, Macy gains the strength and courage to express her feelings and move forward. Although the story is a romance, the real prize at the end of Macy’s hard work is the discovery of her own independence, her own voice, and her own joy.
