The Regata Storica is a famous Italian boat race that is held every September in Venice, Italy. During the event, locals and touristsgather along the canalsin the city to cheer for their favorite teams. In English, the event’s name means “historical boat race.” This is fitting as this tradition dates back more than 500 years. There is no better place for the boat races than Venice since it has long been a maritimecity where many skilled boatmen have lived.
In the early years, the races were set up as challenges to decide who the best boatmen and gondoliers were. The races included large galleys rowed by large groups of oarsmen, as well as smaller boats rowed by only two or three people. In modern times, there are fewer varieties of boats. However, the regatta now has more categories, including separate races for women and children.
People whotake part ineach race do their best to finish in the top four places to take prizes home. The winner receives a red flag, second place gets a white flag, third place is green, and fourth place is blue. In addition, some cash prizes are also awarded.
