Along with wine and cheese, the baguette is strongly associated with France, and with good reason. It is estimated that every day 30 million baguettes are eaten in the country. Not surprisingly, it is common to see people carrying baguettes home from the bakery. What may be a bit astonishing—at least to people outside France—are some customs connected to eating baguettes.

In some countries, dipping cookies or donuts in coffee or tea is considered a natural thing to do. However, those same people who dunk desserts this way would likely be surprised to see a French person do the same with their baguette, a common habit in France.

dip [ dɪp ] vt.
dunk [ dʌŋk ] vt.

The French also like to use their bread to soak up leftover sauce on their plates as they finish a meal. What they don’t do with baguettes is put them on their plates. Instead, the bread is placed on the table next to the main course. French people also don’t use knives to cut their baguettes; pieces are always broken off by hand.

leftover [  ˈlɛftˌovɚ ] a.
a main course 主菜
break off... / break... off 折斷……,(使)……

The French love their baguettes so much that each year, a competition is held to select the best one in all of Paris. In the contest, a 14-member jury evaluates baguettes from about 200 bakers. The judges even measure the loaves to make sure they conform to the French bread law.

The winner not only wins a cash prize of thousands of euros but also earns a contract to supply baguettes to the French president every day for a year. In a country where the baguette is so loved, that is indeed a special honor.
