The month of July has proven disastrous for the residents of Germany, Belgium, and Austria. A series of raging floods have ravaged the landscape, destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, and taken the lives of at least 188 people. In some areas, more rain fell in an hour than in the previous seven weeks. German Chancellor6 Angela Merkel expressed shock at the destruction, and was quoted as saying “... I can almost say that the German language doesn’t have words for the destruction that’s been wreaked.”
Experts are pointing the finger at climate change as the culprit responsible for the recent spate of floods. Hotter temperatures cause more water to evaporate, and a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, which leads to excessive rainfall.
