Egypt’s New Administrative Capital Begins Operations
In the capital of Egypt, Cairo, 20 million people live and work in a very crowded area. What’s more, within the next few decades, the population of Greater Cairo is expected to double. Therefore, a large-scale project to move Cairo’s financial and administrative departments nearly 50 kilometers east was hatched in 2015.
The project is part of the extremely ambitious Egypt Vision 2030, which involves eight main goals that are in line with building a better and sustainable Africa for the future. One of its plans is to build a 700-square-kilometer urban area between Cairo and Suez to serve as a new capital city. The New Administrative Capital (NAC) was designed as a high-tech smart city with 21 residential districts, a downtown with the world’s tallest obelisk, many parks, artificial lakes, hospitals, mosques, churches, stadiums, hotels, and an amusement park four times the size of Disneyland in California. It will be home to many public agencies, schools, and businesses. The authorities expect that 6.5 million people will eventually be living and working in the NAC.
Of course, with every big goal comes a bit of trouble. While the Egyptian government originally planned for more than 50,000 government employees to transfer to the NAC by mid-2020, the COVID-19 crisis forced some delays. Last year, the government officially announced a six-month trial period starting in December. Hopefully, things will get back on track in 2022.
