Everyone loves sunflowers. How can you not be delighted by these wonderful, tall plants with their beautiful, big, round, yellow flowers? They’ve been adored ever since they first appeared in what is now the southern United States and Mexico some 3,000 years ago. Back then, they were a source of food, with Native Americans using their seeds in everything from bread to breakfast cereals. When the flowers were introduced to Europe in the 1700s, the Russians grew them on an industrial scale to produce sunflower oil. Nowadays, they are still grown for their edible seeds and oil and are praised for their health benefits. Of course, they are also used in bridal bouquets and a multitude of other flower arrangements. You might even be lucky enough to find rare red, white, pink, and purple sunflowers being used this way.
