In late 2009, Taiwan’s Council for Cultural Affairs held an exhibition of underwater discoveries at the Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology in Bali Township in northwest New Taipei City. The aim of the exhibition, which was named “Diving Into History,” was to showcase ancient treasures found deep in the waters surrounding the islands of Taiwan.
When people think of underwater archaeology, Taiwan may not be one of the first places that comes to mind. Indeed, most people are more inclined to believe that the world of underwater archaeology largely focuses on countries like Egypt that have long, rich histories and, therefore, many buried treasures. However, the fact is that in recent decades, many key undersea discoveries have been made close to Taiwan, the Penghu Islands in particular.
