Physical books are everywhere. You can buy them at bookstores or borrow them from libraries. You can even find some for sale in convenience stores. The prevalence of books in modern times hasn’t always been the case, though. In the past, books were rare and valuable items that only the extremely wealthy could afford to own.
For much of human history, books had to be painstakingly written by hand. It could take a scribe several years to copy all the words of a book, so they, not surprisingly, came at an enormous price. One book could cost an average person a lifetime’s worth of their earnings. This made books available only in specific locations like churches, universities, or the homes of the elite. However, the publishing of the Gutenberg Bible on February 23, 1455 changed all this.
