Meet Daisy: The AI Granny Taking Down Phone Scammers
In an effort to fight phone scams, British mobile phone company O2 has introduced Daisy, an AI designed to engage phone con artists in time-wasting conversations. Daisy is portrayed as a kindly British granny, exploiting scammers’ tendency to target the elderly. Her voice, based on a real grandmother’s for authenticity, adds to her credibility in the role.
O2 has distributed several dedicated phone numbers online to direct scammers to Daisy instead of actual customers. When Daisy receives a call, she translates the scammers’ spoken words into text and then responds to them accordingly through a text-to-speech system. Remarkably, Daisy has managed to keep numerous con artists on calls for up to 40 minutes, effectively keeping them occupied and away from potential victims.

Australia Takes a Bold Step with Social Media Ban for Under-16s
Australia has passed a landmark law banning children under 16 from using social media. With the aim of protecting minors from the mental health risks associated with social media use, the ban applies to social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit, while YouTube remains unaffected.
Its passage comes after several Australian teenagers died by suicide over what their families said was cyberbullying. A YouGov poll revealed that 77% of Australians support the ban. People in favor of the ban expressed concerns about internet harassment and exposure to harmful content. However, critics warn that this law could lead teenagers to less-monitored environments such as gaming platforms, online forums, or encrypted messaging applications, which may pose new and unexpected risks.
