sliced [ slaɪst ] 指「切片的」，bread 指「麵包」。在 1928 年以前，美國所販售的麵包都是整條未切，直到聰明的 Otto Rohwedder 發明了切麵包機，從此以後就有了切片麵包。美國人太愛這項發明了，此後只要遇到好東西或是好用的發明，他們就會說那是 the best thing since sliced bread（自切片麵包以來最棒的東西）。
