If you want to fika like a true Swede, there are many ways. You can fika in the popular cafés in a big city, or you can fika at home, at work, or even in the woods! Here are some basic instructions for a good fika experience.
It is very important to fika with a friend or two. Fika is a social practice. You cannot do it alone; that would just be having coffee and cake. To do fika right, slow down and really listen to the people around you. Also, for people who don’t like coffee, it is also acceptable to drink tea, juice, smoothies, and other drinks.
It is suggested that you use your fika time to sample some of Sweden’s wonderful cakes and pastries. The classic Princess cake provides a great opportunity to take a mouth-watering photo that will make all your friends very jealous. Other local special sweets include Swedish Midsummer Cake, Swedish sticky chocolate cake, and cinnamon rolls.
The best news is that you can fika as much as you like. There is no limit on how many times in one day a person should fika . Most importantly, remember to take your time and enjoy it!
