Unit 9 I can’t agree with you more. 或 I couldn’t agree with you more.？

 

例 I fully / totally / completely agree with you. (O) 

(我完全同意你的看法。)

 

例 A: That girl over there is really pretty.
     B:  I can’t agree with you more. (較少見)
          →  I couldn’t agree with you more. (O) 
          = I fully agree with you. (O) 

A：那邊那個女孩子真美。
B：我完全同意你的看法。

此處 “I couldn’t agree with you more” 按字面的翻譯是「我無法更加同意你的看法了。」，意即「我同意你的看法，同意到了極點，無法復加了。」，是與現在事實相反的假設語氣，故助動詞 can’t 應改為過去式。

現在事實：I fully agree with you.     (我完全同意你的看法。)
 

原句實為：I fully agree with you. If you asked me to agree with you more, I couldn’t.
 (你若要我再多同意你一點，我做不到。)  即：我完全／同意你到了極點，無法再更同意了。

C. 例 A:   How’s it goin’? (goin [ ˋgoɪn] 是 going 的口語說法)
         B:   (It) Can’t be better. (×)
                → (It) Couldn’t be better.(O) 

     A：一切都好嗎？
     B：好得不得了／好極了。（好到無法更好的地步了。）

 例 A:   I’ve heard your ex-girlfriend is getting married next month.
      B:    I can’t care less. (×)
             → I couldn’t care less. (O) 
              = I don’t care at all.(O) 
              = I don’t give a damn. (O，俚語)

       A：聽說你的前女友下個月就要結婚了。
       B：我才不在乎呢。（我不在乎到了極點，無法更加不在乎了。）
