Devastating Earthquake in Morocco Claims Lives, Homes, and Heritage
A rare and powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on
September 8, causing devastation on a large scale. The earthquake, the largest
in the country in 120 years, sent people fleeing their homes in panic and resulted
in more than 2,500 deaths. The damage was particularly serious in the ancient city
of Marrakech and five nearby provinces.Historic buildings, such as the famous
Koutoubia Mosque and the UNESCO World Heritage red walls, were affected.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI ordered military search and rescue teams and a field hospital to help, while world leaders and neighboring Algeria offered support and aid. As many historically important sites were damaged, UNESCO has also promised to support the Moroccan government in reconstruction.
The earthquake had a magnitude of just 3.2, so fortunately it was not strong enough to cause serious damage.
