You're jumping the gun, Mary. Mary: Got you! I'm just kidding. I just wanted to see the look on your face. Anthony: Now I know what it feels like to have a heart attack.
jump 是『跳』，gun 是『槍』，jump the gun 字面上的意思是『跳槍』，源自於賽跑時有些跑者過於緊張，當裁判喊到『預備──』，尚未鳴槍之際，他們就先『偷跑』，英文稱作 jump the gun，以後即以此俚語喻『過早行動』。
阿雄和阿花兩人一起參加賽跑，阿雄在等待起跑時因為太過緊張，在發號員喊出『各就各位』（on your marks）、『預備』（get set）之後，還沒聽到鳴槍（starter's gun）就先跑了出去。阿花事後問他，"Why did you jump the gun?"（你為什麼要偷跑？）原來是阿雄突然看到對面有個辣妹，一時猴急想趕快跑去看清楚，於是就尷尬『偷跑』（false start）了。
jump 作動詞表『跳』時，可以這樣用：
The kids were jumping up and down in joy.
（孩子們開心地跳上跳下。）
jump 亦可用在 jump out of one's skin（跳出某人的皮膚）這個俚語中，表『嚇得魂不附體』之意。
阿雄開車時老是橫衝直撞，阿花每次搭他的車總是心驚膽跳。有一次阿雄又突然緊急煞車，阿花不禁就說了：
I almostjumped out of my skin.
（我嚇到要死！）
並且指著他大罵：
Don't you know how dangerous it is to jump red lights?
= Don't you know how dangerous it is to run the red light? (更常用)
（你不知道闖紅燈很危險嗎？）
jump the queue 則表『插隊』，queue 是英國人常用名詞，等於美語中的 line，指『行列、隊伍』。
後來阿雄與阿花去看電影，在排隊買票時，阿花看到有人插隊，於是正義感十足地說：
Please don't jump the queue. Get in line!（英式用法）
= Please don't cut in line. Line up!（美式用法）
