表『唯恐∕以免……』的副詞子句

句型：

S + V +

S + V... lest + S + (should) + V... = S + V... in case (that) + S + V... = S + V... for fear (that) + S + V... = S + V... for fear of + V-ing...

• She turned down the music lest she (should) wake up the sleeping baby.
  = She turned down the music in case she would wake up the sleeping baby.
  = She turned down the music for fear she would wake up the sleeping baby.
  = She turned down the music for fear of waking up the sleeping baby.
  （她將音樂聲關小，唯恐吵醒正在睡覺的小寶寶。）

 

《補充說明》 

in case (that) + S + V... 另有美式用法相當於 if + S + V... 表『如果／萬一⋯⋯』，如：In case you can't come, give me a call before 5:30.（萬一你不能來，五點半之前打電話通知我。）
