You have probably looked up at the sky on a sunny day and were amazed that it was so blue. But have you ever wondered why the sky appears to be this color? Why isn’t it green or purple?
The blue color of the daytime sky is due to a scientific phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. It’s when sunlight entering the Earth’s atmosphere interacts with gas molecules such as nitrogen and oxygen, causing the light to scatter in all directions. The blue color we see is caused by the shorter wavelength of blue light, which is scattered more than other colors of light by the small gas molecules. As a result, blue light dominates the light we see, giving the sky its blue hue. Violet actually has the shortest wavelength, but since our eyes are less sensitive to violet light, the sky doesn’t appear purple.
