In April, Taiwanese director Ang Lee was awarded with a Fellowship at the 74th British Academy Film Awards. The annual Fellowship award is the highest honor bestowed by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and is given to an individual in recognition of their outstanding contribution to film, games, or television throughout their life.
Born in Pingtung, Taiwan, in 1954, Lee has received dozens of accolades during his film career that has spanned four decades. He first found international fame with his Father Knows Best trilogy, which is comprised of the Chinese-language films Pushing Hands (1991), The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994). The last was nominated for a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, and a BAFTA, in addition to receiving several other awards and many other nominations .
Lee’s first English-language film Sense and Sensibility (1995) was a commercial and critical success. The Austen adaptation , which starred Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, and Hugh Grant, earned Lee a BAFTA for Best Film and his second Golden Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival. Lee’s success continued with his award-winning, history-making film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). Over the years, he also directed and produced other hits, including Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Life of Pi (2012).
For the announcement of the award, the Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee noted that Lee is a “master of his craft” and an “ incredibly versatile, daring, and exceptional filmmaker who effortlessly moves between genres .” Presenting the award at the virtual ceremony , Hugh Grant said that Lee was “ arguably world cinema’s classiest filmmaker” and alluded to the numerous awards and accolades he has collected over the years.
