In 1992, the residents of Aceredo, a small Spanish village located on the northern border of Spain and Portugal, were forced to leave their homes. Despite intense protest, including a 10-day hunger strike, the Portuguese government across the border was going ahead with plans to flood the valley behind the Alto Lindoso Dam, whose purpose was to generate hydroelectricity. The accompanying reservoir would serve as a stable water source for the surrounding region. Out of choices, the Aceredo residents packed their belongings and fled their small community, never expecting to see it again.
