It happens to all of us. You type something into Google’s search bar and hit Enter. Much to your disappointment, however, the results aren’t what you’re looking for at all. Sound familiar? Then you could benefit from the following search skills:
1. Use quotation marks (“ ”) for essential text.
Help Google make a better guess and filter out less relevant results by telling it an exact word or phrase that the website must contain. For example, type love poems “roses” “sunflowers” if you want to find a love poem that mentions roses AND sunflowers. Without the quotation marks, some results might only contain “roses” or “sunflowers,” not both.
2. Use a hyphen (-) to “exclude” certain words.
The opposite of quotation marks, hyphens will tell Google to ignore content with those words. For instance, if you want to search for Paris landmarks aside from the Louvre Museum, then type Paris landmarks -Louvre.
