Squirrels are smarter in the fall.

One thing about squirrels that’ll blow your mind is that they get smarter during the autumn. One particular study showed that the hippocampus of male Richardson’s ground squirrels expands by roughly 15 percent in size during the fall months. This part of the brain is responsible for memory, which probably comes in handy when it’s time for them to hoard nuts and memorize where everything is buried.

Leaves reveal their true color in autumn.

One of the main attractions of fall is witnessing the change of color on the trees. However, we aren’t technically seeing the leaves change. Instead, we are seeing them lose their green hue. This is because while converting sunlight to energy, leaves produce a chemical called chlorophyll which creates a green pigment in the leaves. Once cooler weather comes around and the amount of sunlight diminishes, the chlorophyll breaks down and what you are left with is the natural pigment of the leaves, whether it’s red, orange, or yellow.
