Taipei City Says Goodbye to Plastic Cups in December
Taipei residents might notice a difference when they go to buy pearl milk tea from their favorite drink shop. On August 6, the Taipei City Government announced that beverage shops would be banned from using single-use plastic cups as of December 1. The ban is for both chain and independent stores and includes cups made from polylactic acid bioplastic. The city’s Department of Environmental Protection estimates that the new measure will eliminate 76 million disposable plastic cups a year.
Implementing this policy makes Taipei the first municipality in Taiwan to enact the Environmental Protection Administration’s policy of reducing plastic cup usage by 2024. Furthermore, the new restrictions are in line with the United Nations Environment Assembly’s call to end plastic pollution around the globe.
