As the world slowly opens up to international travel following the COVID-19 pandemic, which left many people confined to their home countries, a lot of people are now excitedly thinking about which holiday destination they want to head to first. On
a tourist’s list of potential destinations, you’re likely to find popular spots like Japan, Thailand, and Bali. However, more adventurous travelers may look to paths traditionally less trodden. For example, it seems that one country with a lot to offer tourists is The Gambia.
Located in Western Africa, The Gambia is not easy to find on a map for anyone who has never looked for it. This tiny country is Africa’s smallest non-island nation in terms of land area. The Gambia is mostly surrounded by the larger country of Senegal, except for its coastline in the west. It occupies a long narrow strip of land with the Gambia River running through its middle. The Gambia’s unique shape and size are the results of its colonial history. In the 19th century, Great Britain held control over the lower part of the Gambia River, while France ruled over Senegal. Eventually, the two nations reached an agreement on how to divide up their territories.
