We all hope for happiness in life. For some, that could mean owning a house, having professional success, or finding a life partner. We generally assume that once we get what we desire, our happiness will increase. Research shows that this is not usually the outcome, though. People may be happy for a while after they accomplish a goal or fulfill a desire. However, they tend to go back to prior levels of happiness afterwards. This phenomenon is known as the hedonic treadmill. __1__ This was true after fortunate experiences, like winning the lottery, as well as unfortunate experiences, such as becoming disabled. Despite fluctuations, individuals typically bounce back to their “set point” of happiness.
