More Than 5 Billion Smartphones Became Waste in 2022
Of the approximately 16 billion smartphones currently found worldwide, experts have estimated that around 5.3 billion have been either tossed out or stored away in the past year. Unfortunately, only 17% of this e-waste is recycled correctly, making e-waste one of the fastest-growing environmental concerns.
Smartphones contain tiny amounts of precious metals like copper, gold, silver, and palladium that are not only difficult to mine but vital to other industries. If not disposed of correctly, they can be highly toxic to the environment. So, making sure to safely recycle your old devices can reduce both pollution and the number of resources needed to be mined from the earth.
