New research suggests that the battle against malaria, dengue fever , and other diseases spread by mosquitoes is getting tougher. According to an official from Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases, mutations have made some species of this annoying pest much more resistant to a chemical called permethrin in insecticides than ever before.
Shinji Kasai, a director at the institute, said some of the insects are virtually immune to chemical control. While it is common for mosquitoes to build up resistance over time, Kasai said some mosquitoes in Cambodia and Vietnam were 1,000 times more resistant to insecticides than before. In the past, researchers only observed mosquitoes with just one-tenth of that level of resistance.
