Rubber ducks have long been popular bath-time toys for children. However, they may not be as innocent as they look. In fact, they harbor harmful bacteria that could spread diseases. A study by American and Swiss researchers examined the microbes present inside the yellow toys. The researchers found potentially pathogenic bacteria in four __1__ the five toys studied, including a bacterium often associated with infections that people acquire in hospitals.
The researchers noted that the composition of the material used in making the rubber ducks was a key factor. Certain materials release carbon, which feeds bacteria and __2__ their growth. More specifically, the research findings revealed a high concentration of bacteria and fungi, with up to 75 million cells per square centimeter __3__ inside the rubber ducks.
