What comes to mind when you think of strong, tough materials? Perhaps you conjure up images of metals, like iron or titanium. Or maybe you think of items known for their hardness, such as diamonds. What you probably don’t come up with is graphene.
Graphene is a new material that was first isolated in 2004. It was discovered by a team at the University of Manchester in the UK, which was led by physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov. This material, considered a magical substance, is only one atom thick, making it the first single-layer material ever discovered. Not only is graphene the thinnest material in the world, but it is also the strongest. It is more than 200 times stronger than steel and 40 times harder than diamonds.
