Reality television shows became particularly popular in the 1980s and 1990s. It was at the turn of the 21st century, though, that a subgenre of reality TV became a phenomenon: competition reality shows. Broadly speaking, these programs feature contestants taking part in various tasks and trials while trying to beat the other competitors and win a grand prize. However, the nature of the challenges can differ wildly depending on the specific format of the show.
The US show Survivor, for instance, strands a group of contestants on an uninhabited island, where they must endure physical and mental challenges to survive. Meanwhile, the UK’s The Great Pottery Throw Down allows contestants to demonstrate their talents in one very specific area, pottery. Arguably the most interesting competition reality show in recent years, though, is Squid Game: The Challenge. This program was inspired by the South Korean drama series Squid Game, which caused a sensation worldwide. The drama featured the cash-strapped players getting killed in various games until only one remained to win a huge cash prize. While the participants in The Challenge do not risk death, they do have to participate in similarly tough games.
